It is the largest seaport in Massachusetts with handling facilities in East Boston, Charleston, Everett, and South Boston. The Massachusetts Port Authority administers the Port of Boston which handles cruises, cargo, and ferry services. The port has access to a truck-only haul road, the I-90, I-93, and U.S. 1 for ground transportation. The public Massport facilities accessible at the Port of Boston include the Flynn Cruiseport Boston, Conley Terminal (South Boston), Boston Autoport (Charlestown), and Boston Fish Pier (South Boston) which serve as a cruise terminal, container facility, processing and shipping of automobiles, and fish pier respectively. The Non-Massport facilities accessible through the port are located in Everett, Chelsea, Revere, Chelsea River area (East Boston) where petroleum, LNG, and bulk cargo shipment and storage are handled. The port also handles salt and gypsum. In 2015, the port handled 328,305 cruise ship passengers, 60,000 automobiles, 121,000 metric tons of cement, and 237,000 container TEUs. Some of the piers and wharves accessible through the port include the Boston Fish Pier, Commonwealth Pier, Central Wharf, and Children’s Wharf, among others. The Foreign Trade Zone No. 27 managed by Massport serves the whole of Suffolk County, Massachusetts through many port-owned and privately owned sites. The Port of Boston maintains its own police force which works in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police.
