Walvis Bay
The bay provides sheltered anchorage for commercial vessels that typically require tug assistance to reach the port. The assistance is required for both cargo and passenger vessels, as is the request for pilotage. The port handles more than six million tons of cargo per year, with a total of nearly half a million TEUs.Over 3,000 ships call at Walvis Bay annually, including cruise ships the size of the Queen Mary 2. The port continues to expand its facilities. Its latest efforts have made it the international commercial port for Southern Africa. It boasts over 600 feet of new quay space for ships up to a depth of over 15 feet. The container facility has increased capacity to almost a million TEU containers annually and has reduced transit time to just under ten days.
Port of Luderitz
Namport operates the port’s three floating docks with capacities of 15,000 to 6,500 tons. The port is south of Walvis and focuses on southern Namibia and Northern South Africa. Its recent upgrades have made it a key component of the country’s diamond and mining operations. Shipping from Port Luderitz lessens travel time by as much as two days over northern South Africa routes. It provides efficient operations with one 45-ton Reach Stacker and multiple 60-ton Haulers along its expanded 500 feet quay.
