Hazmat Trucking Companies: A Guide

Transporting hazardous materials is a specialized logistics niche. Hazmat trucking companies  hold specific licenses to operate in particular states and have drivers that are expertly trained to transport each of the types of hazardous materials listed below. They also utilize specific equipment that’s designed for each kind of material being transported.

For example, a company may use special temperature-controlled trailers to transport liquefied gases, such as liquid oxygen, which must be kept at very cold temperatures. Or, they may use specially insulated containers to transport flammable solids, such as lithium, which can cause fires from contact with moisture. Many hazardous substances must be kept within a limited temperature range and demand special equipment and/or containers during transport, which these companies possess and supply.

Categories of Hazardous Materials

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has nine classes of hazardous materials (hazmat) based on the type of hazard they pose. These classes, some respective examples, and their shipping requirements are as follows:

Class 1: Explosives

Explosive materials can cause significant damage and injury if they detonate. Examples include fireworks, dynamite, and blasting agents. The requirements for shipment of explosives depend on the quantity and type of explosive.

Class 2: Gases

This class covers materials that are stored in a gaseous state under pressure, including compressed gases, liquefied gases, and dissolved gases. Examples include propane, oxygen, and nitrogen. Shipment requirements for gases depend on the type of gas and the amount being shipped.

Class 3: Flammable Liquids

Flammable liquids have a flashpoint below 100 degrees Fahrenheit and can ignite and burn easily. Examples include gasoline, diesel fuel, and alcohol. Flammable liquids must be shipped in approved containers and may have additional packaging requirements.

Class 4: Flammable Solids

Flammable solids are readily combustible and can cause fires through friction, impact, or contact with moisture. Examples include matches, nitrocellulose, and certain types of metal powders. Flammable solids must be shipped in approved containers and may require additional packaging.

Class 5: Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides

Oxidizers and organic peroxides are materials that can cause or promote combustion in other materials or increase the intensity of a fire. Examples include hydrogen peroxide, ammonium nitrate, and potassium chlorate. Oxidizers and organic peroxides must be shipped in approved containers and may have additional packaging requirements.

Class 6: Toxic and Infectious Substances

Toxic and infectious substances are materials that can cause harm to human health or the environment, including chemicals, biological agents, and medical waste. Examples include pesticides, infectious substances, and mercury. Shipment requirements for toxic and infectious substances depend on the type of substance and the amount being shipped.

Class 7: Radioactive Materials

Radioactive materials emit ionizing radiation. Examples include uranium, plutonium, and radioactive medical isotopes. Radioactive materials must be shipped in approved containers and may have additional packaging and labeling requirements.

Class 8: Corrosives

Corrosives are materials that can cause damage to living tissue or other materials through a chemical reaction. Examples include sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide. Corrosives must be shipped in approved containers and may require additional packaging.

Class 9: Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials

Miscellaneous hazardous materials pose a danger but do not fit into any of the other categories. Examples include lithium batteries, asbestos, and dry ice. Shipment requirements for miscellaneous hazardous materials depend on the type of material and the amount being shipped.
