In Depth: Canada’s Port Infrastructure
Canada has 550 port facilities. The Canadian Port Authorities operate the following ports:
St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Port of St. John’s has been the home of the Canadian fishing industry for 500 years. It continues to be the primary port for fishing vessels in the Atlantic. The port has two ice-class vessels for roll-on/roll-off cargo and one ice-class vessel for container shipments. The port provides services for offshore energy production within 280 nautical miles. The port offers marine maintenance and repair services. The entrance to the port is through a narrow channel of 30 feet. All access requires pilotage.
Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Port of Halifax has four terminals – PSA Halifax Atlantic Hub, PSA Fairview Cove, Richmond, and Ocean.
- Halifax Atlantic Hub Terminal. The terminal has a secured truck yard and roll on/roll off capabilities. It handles about 500,000 TEU per year and has 8,000 feet of on-dock rail services.
- Fairview Cove Terminal. Fairview covers 70 acres and includes 11,000 feet of double-stacked rail. The water depth is a minimum of 55 feet; however, there is a bridge restriction at high tide of 160 feet. The terminal processes 650,000 TEUs annually. It has roll-on/roll-off and container capabilities.
- Richmond Terminal. The multipurpose terminal handles breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off cargo. The berth depths range from 29 to 45 feet. The terminal has ready access to rail and ground transportation.
- Ocean Terminal. Although the terminal is multipurpose, it is considered a passenger terminal. The maximum depth for all piers is 30 feet.
Belledune, New Brunswick. The port is an artificial harbor, located in northeast New Brunswick. It primarily serves the surrounding industrial area. The port sees about 80 vessels per year and handles 2 million tons of cargo. It has four terminals.
- Terminal 1 is used for import/export processes. It offers bulk storage of mineral concentrates. The maximum depth is 36 feet.
- Terminal 2 is dedicated to unloading coal. It has an automated unloader. The berths have a depth of 46.9 feet.
- Terminal 3 handles general and bulk cargo. Its berths have a depth of 37 feet.
- Terminal 4 has a direct connection to highways for ground transportation. It can support roll-on/roll-off cargo. Barges help move cargo from ship to shore, given the terminal’s depth of just under 30 feet.
St. John, New Brunswick. The Port of St. John rests on the southern border of the Bay of Fundy. Its location makes ground and rail transportation readily accessible to the United States, Montreal, and Toronto. The port has six public terminals and three private. Two of the public terminals are dedicated to cruise lines. A third terminal – Long Wharf – is used for cruise ship docking if three ships are in port at the same time. About 75 cruise ships dock at the port each year, and the port handles about 30 million tons of cargo. The port handles container, liquid, and dry bulk shipments. It has roll-on/roll-off capabilities.
Trois Rivieres, Quebec. The Port of Trois Rivieres rests on the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and Quebec City. The port began operations in 1809 and has grown to handle 250 ships and 3.5 million metric tons of cargo. The water depth depends on the season but averages between 39 and 42 feet.
The port has three terminals. The Elevator terminals have two grain elevators with a capacity of 110,000 metric tons. It has two berths and access to rail transportation. The General Cargo terminal has three warehouses for storing cargo and 4 berths for loading and unloading. The Solid and Liquid terminal includes access to a pipeline network and railways.
Saguenay, Quebec. Grand-Anse is the commercial terminal that makes up the Port of Saquenay. An International Cruise terminal provides docking services for St. Lawrence River cruises that totaled 60,000 passengers in 2019. Considered a deep-water port, the terminal water depth is 45 feet at low tide. The port has rail access making it a transshipment site for cargo heading to northern Quebec.
