In Depth: California’s Ports Infrastructure

California has 12 seaports, including the two busiest ports in America – Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach. The remaining ten ports include the Ports of Richmond, Oakland, Stockton, San Francisco, Redwood City, Hueneme, San Diego, West Sacramento, and Benicia. The Humboldt Harbor District also includes a seaport. All but the Port of Benicia are publicly owned.

Port of Los Angeles. The port covers 3,200 acres of water and 4,300 acres of land. Its waterfront extends 43 miles, and its main channel is 53 feet deep. Of its 25 terminals, seven are containers.

Port of Long Beach. Located seven miles south of the Port of Los Angeles, the Port of Long Beach is the second busiest port in California. It has 4,600 acres of water and 3,520 acres of land with ten piers and 80 berths. Depending on location, the bay has a depth range of 32 to 75 feet.

Port of Richmond. The port is situated on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in the Oakland suburb of Richmond. It has five public and ten private terminals. The Richmond Harbor channel has a water depth of 38 to 45 feet.

Port of Oakland. The port officially opened in 1927 under the auspices of the City of Oakland. The port operates as a container and intermodal facility with rail and ground transportation connections. It has six terminals. Four terminals are designated for cargo use.

Port of Stockton. The Port of Stockton is located 70 miles east of the Pacific Ocean; yet, it can handle vessels with a 35-to-40-foot draught. The wetlands surrounding Stockton were drained and dredged so ships entering the San Francisco Bay could travel east to the heart of California’s farming country.

Port of San Francisco. The port sits inside the natural harbor of San Francisco Bay. It is a well-protected port that services commercial, cruise, and fishing vessels. About half of the 112 vessels that pass through the port are cruise ships.

Port of Redwood City. Redwood City manages the port, located on the southern shores of San Francisco Bay. It is the only deep-water facility in the south bay area. The port has five wharves.

Port of Hueneme. The port is located about 60 miles north of downtown Los Angeles. The port specializes in breakbulk and roll-on/roll-off for automobiles. It offers deep-water access up to 35 feet.

Port of San Diego. The port is located off the shores of San Diego. It has two cargo terminals, two cruise ship terminals, and an extensive waterfront with hotels, parks, and restaurants

Port of West Sacramento. The port resides 79 nautical miles from San Francisco Bay. Access is through a 40-mile Deep Water Ship Channel, maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers at a depth of 30 feet.

Humboldt Bay Harbor. The harbor district is located in northern California at the edge of the Redwood and Sequoia National Forests. All vessels entering the harbor must use pilots to navigate the channels. Most of the cargo leaving the port is lumber or lumber-related products.

The Port of Benicia, located in the San Francisco Bay, is privately owned.
