Find a Freight Forwarder in Chicago

Find a freight forwarder at the Port of Chicago with our comprehensive listing. The port consists of two facilities: one located at the mouth of the Chicago river and one at the mouth of the Calumet river. The original port began operations in the 18th century as a way to transport fur, lumber, and agricultural products to the East Coast. The Iroquois Landing on the Calumet River was added to the port facility in 1978 when the Navy Pier was decommissioned. The Illinois State Government created the Illinois International Port District with a Board of Directors to manage the district. The port is the only facility that provides access to the Great Lakes and to inland rivers. Vessels can reach the Atlantic Ocean through the St. Lawrence Seaway. The inland rivers of Mississippi and Illinois carry cargo to the Gulf of Mexico. The port can accommodate vessels with a depth of 40 feet traveling through the St. Lawrence Seaway. Barges are used to transport goods inland using the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. Because Chicago is a major transportation hub, five federal highways meet in Chicago, simplifying cargo transfers. Six railroad companies have facilities near the port for transporting goods by rail. Air freight is available through both Chicago airports – Midway and O’Hare. Its access to all modes of transportation makes Chicago a transshipment hub, moving more than 26 million tons of goods per year. The Iroquois Landing terminal specializes in container services. The location has over 100,000 square feet of storage with 100 acres of paved concrete. Its maximum depth is 27 feet. The port includes transit sheds for storage. The port district has grain elevators that can hold 14 million bushels of grain and 800,000 barrels of liquid bulk. Because of its location, Chicago processes a range of cargo types: steel, grain, graphite, zinc, scrap metals, coke, lead, sugar, and vegetable oils. The US Department of Homeland Security manages the Port of Chicago’s security service.
